I love the continuing drumbeat of how awful the writing on the Web is in general, when compared with print or direct mail. It implies a glaring opportunity for freelance writers to learn about how to sell themselves to the likes of companies and organizations that would hire them. Or: 'that should hire them?' Got Web? Use Content Marketing.

What makes writing for the Web different is where we're concerned in the search business. The audience for a piece of writing must include the Web searching public. Thereby, craft your writing around using popular keywords that relate to the business of your client, or are somehow words that the used by the consumers of your client's products and services.

One of the most challenging areas to write for, that search professionals need at least a loose familiarity, is legal writing. If your client base includes anything in the pharmaceutical industry, for example, the search writing will likely have legal passages that are required, or the use of language which must be avoided. Get the guidelines, and write accordingly.

The story on NPR about how funny the results can be a real influence, all kidding aside, about how important it is to be clear. I'm plenty guilty of writing cryptic thoughts on Twitter. As Disa Johnson on Twitter, learned to hone in on a style that is ultimately minimalist for a Web platform as popular as Twitter is today. To combine Twitter and blogging is something I've looked forward to doing for some time.

Love Zombie Pub Crawl

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Oh last night was a riot. There was a zombie pub crawl on the North side of Chicago. We went to Andersonville where I started with Sazeracs and crawfish salad at Big Jones. I'm the mayor of that place now, so my first drink is free. Perfect for Disa since we're talking about my Southern cooking Sazerac fetish for Big Jones. We raved later at Hamburger Mary's. They switched me to water since I ended up freaking with a young angel zombie. His name was Jose and he wore wings. Hot mess. Awesome.

Simple Thoughts

Here's some more fodder since I have incentive to start keeping this blog fresh for search engines. You know, it's going to be filled with Simple Thoughts until I start my radio show in earnest. At that point, I'm sure the posts will be more material. Until then, if you read this at all, I hope it keeps you company, provides a measure of comfort. I wouldn't know lol.

A Fabulous Feeling

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
I feel fabulous. I'm enjoying a BBQ lunch with beer while I wait for some awesome things to occur for me in business. Good things come to those who wait, as I was always told. I love the fact not lost on me, even one from the distant past. City of Big Shoulders.

So I realize since I've overtaken all my rankings (for the most part), more than a year has past. This is one of those outlets I used to prop up my effort to keep them rolling along in my favor. I have a trip to Denver coming up, and I'd like to show up hot. I'll skip the fries, thanks.

But beer and BBQ is the way to go for now. I'm going to celebrate! This nonsensical new post is to prop up this blog since it's been so long, and weathered down a bit in the rankings. Nothing like a good fresh post to keep things alive, no? LOL.

Seriously though, I could be so much worse off. I'm healthy, had my scares and I'm feeling fine. This is all winding down down down, and I'm paying far less attention to it since as things go, I have all the energy in the world where my foe has long since gone silent. Just in time for an in person Disa Johnson shock, on Denver time.

Oh the German Fest was truly fun. I had big beer and a brat. I will get some pictures up and write more about it as time is available. In the mean time, I'm pretty happy that for quite a while, I now have commanded all results that are above the fold on my search. That's what I wanted to say. I've done my part writing more about, well about me! I guess we all would write about ourselves ad infinitum if we could. I can so I did. If you're bored to tears, stay tuned. More exciting writing will be had.

Migraine Headaches

disa-johnson.jpg

I am writing a little about migraine headaches because I get them a few times per year. I had one yesterday. It lasted longer than 24 hours. I was totally sensitive to light, including light from looking at a computer screen. I was practically useless, even though I had work tasks to do. I accomplished one or two things. I could not accomplish all that I had hoped to set out to do.

I also have been neglecting posting much on the blog, electing instead to populate a little more on my Yelp profile, other website profile maintenance (yes, that's a hint LOL), and even MySpace. I configured my iPod Touch with more mobile social media applications to make my connected life easier. I also wrote some new code for Eric's website.

I have more to do. I am staring at a hell of a lot of things I want to do with Search Return's website and the application. Code code code. Yes yes yes. I will get to it all in good time. At least the migraine is gone now. It came at a cost. I couldn't grab the latest Google screen shot on my name, since I just wasn't up to looking at it. This entry can help a little.

I ran a mile though. I know it's not much but I'm working on it. The changes to my body are happening at a bit of a quickened pace. I want to be sure I reach at least a basic level of fitness as I adapt to the change. It's a constant concern if but worth it to pay attention and work hard. I've been anticipating this level of work all my life. I'm glad it's finally here.

I am also quick politically motivated. I've done one or two hinting posts here and there for what anyone interested could come to expect from my super liberal thoughts. One thing is true. I'm unflappable and persuasive to anyone with half a wit, a logical mind. I advocate for helath reform far more than what we're going to get, if we get anything at all.

If you don't think you have enough time to get to work after taking the time to make your own breakfast, I completely understand. At 40, I moved fairly hard and fast trying to get to the point where my career could support a lifestyle where I can take on dramatic change in middle age. I built the know-how over time. I didn't necessarily take my own advice. There's no time like now!

Even if I enjoyed my Sunday with a drink or two, I enjoyed them for brunch. I didn't overdo it like I might have in my twenties. They made me fairly tired to sleep the night soundly. On a Sunday night, looking forward to the workweek, at my age I'm not going to stay up all night and party. I like to party like it's 1999 whenever I can. Sometimes, it's just not wise for me anymore.

I woke at 4am. By 4:30am I was working out. I did 20 minutes cardiovascular exercise. Another 20 minutes doing strength training. I was a little sore to do too much. Just getting in there and doing it on a schedule is good. When the cycle breaks, I get back on it and return to a workout lifestyle as best I can. I wanted a solid breakfast thinking about my post yesterday. I had to get going before the the Monday work started in earnest.

Right after the workout, the morning sun began falling on the city with some spectacular scenery from my vantage point. I took some photos that include the Trump Tower, the Sears Tower (which has been renamed to Willis Tower). I also took a photo looking out on Near West where the Coop is located. The Coop review in Timeout Chicago is ranking on Disa Johnson, which has me smile every time I see the result.

While taking the photos today, I read the newspaper. The stories that I found particularly interesting other than business things, were about how Yosemite is losing its big trees and Kepler proves it can find new earth size planets, hopefully habitable planets. That's a good mix of news. Bad news for our planet. What else is new? Intriguing news for the future of our species (if we only get our act together). Then I decided to make breakfast.

090810-640x480-sunrise.jpg

If you don't think you can afford the time to make breakfast, I really get it. Just consider that I spent time working out, reading the paper and ended up making a good breakfast by 8:30am. That's plenty of time to get ready and make it to work by 10am, which is when I began to start. I wrote this in the intervening 90 minutes. I made a good breakfast. Pictures follow.

090810-640x480-6am.jpg

I was reading the Tribune and suddenly, within 10 minutes, the sun broke out looking like this.

090810-640x480-10min-sunrise.jpg

Here is a photo how the buildings cast a shadow across the city looking out West.

090810-640x480-building-shadows.jpg

I spent a little more than hour finishing the main sections of the paper, listening to NPR and taking a shower, getting ready for the work day. By the time it was close to 8am, I started making steel cut oats. I make a cup which serves four. I wrap and refrigerate the remainder after a serving. I got the ingredients together for a special egg toast treat. Recipe with pictures can't be beat. Here it is with 5 minutes or so left for the oats left to cook. All the ingredients are gathered.

090810-640x480-8am-breakfast.jpg

Here it is after the oats were finished and removed from the heat source.

090810-640x480-oatsdone-10mins.jpg

Now is the perfect time for heating the pan and a pat of butter for the eggs.

090810-640x480-starteggs.jpg

You want to heat the pan so the butter is nice and bubbling. Here is it 5 minutes from cool pan to bubbling butter, ready to cook eggs.

090810-640x480-butter-5mins.jpg

090810-640x480-bubbling-butter.jpg

With the pan this hot make sure not to burn the butter. Don't under cook eggs either. With the pan hot, the eggs will cook fast. They won't be runny or messy. You want to make sure to cook them to prevent disease from possible bacteria contamination. According the FDA, it happens. Cooking properly will keep you healthy safe and sound.

I measured a tablespoon of butter for two eggs. Some nutrition info is at the end of the post. Here the eggs are setting after a little more than one minute.

090810-640x480-seteggs-1min.jpg

Once the eggs were nice and set like the picture above, I added about 2 ounces  of cheddar, and sprinkled cayenne pepper. There are so many things you could combine, I like a little spice.

090810-640x480-cheddar-cayenne-2mins.jpg

I then add one or two tablespoons of fresh water around the eggs and cover it! While I let it cook for another two or three minutes, I start the toaster and serve the oats covering the rest with wrap. Steel cut oats with blueberries are tasty and contain plenty of fiber and antioxidants with blueberries. I put all four servings of oats in the dish. I wrap and refrigerate the remainder in that dish.

090810-480x640-oats-blueberries.jpg

Blueberries contain molecules for healthy epigenes. More on that later.

090810-640x480-serve-oats-2mins.jpg

Toast is ready now too!

090810-640x480-toastready.jpg

Oats are wrapped, served, just in time for the lovely eggs...

090810-640x480-eggsready.jpg

I kept the Business section of the Tribune for reading while enjoying this breakfast. I added a banana to the scene, which adds potassium and a bit more fiber. The oats have plenty of packed energy with the wheat toast. The eggs carry a payload of protein. It isn't altogether the healthiest thing to eat everyday because of the portion and fat. It is great after a good workout. It will satisfy you through lunch.

090810-breakfast-30mins.jpg

The whole thing took 30 minutes start to finish, 900 total calories. You won't need much lunch. Lots of fiber, minerals and vitamins. Really healthy, tasty eating. It's a treat. Not an everyday breakfast. Cut out 200 calories by making just one egg on one toast, half the butter.

Steel cut oats = 140 calories
Blueberries = 50 calories
Banana = 70 calories
Toast x 2 = 200 calories
Eggs x 2 = 140 calories
Butter = 100 calories
Cheese = 200 calories

With that many calories, don't eat much lunch. Have a satisfying snack intead. Like toast with cottage cheese, sprinkled with thyme and cracked pepper. That only adds 200 calories for barely over 1100 calories before dinner. A light dinner and you can lose weight eating like this. I do that exactly. It keeps me energetic and healthy while I do.

We all want to look our best. I have some particular needs regarding health and beauty that I think any and all readers should get something from. I am writing this after doing some meal plans and reading up on the latest findings on food and nutrition as it affects bloating, water retention and other nagging things which undermine self confidence.

Don't skip breakfast. Drink things that contain lots of water, no alcohol. It's Sunday. I may break that rule on alcohol. The key is moderation in all that I do. Since I have goals, I sometimes really plan out what I'm going to have. I am lucky enough to have a grocery store in my building. I don't have to plan very far out.

This morning, I knew I had some wheat bread for toast, a tomato and a little yogurt in the refrigerator. That doesn't sound like much. It's fairly well-balanced though, all in all. I also had one serving of Kashi cereal left. That's actually all that I have, save for coffee and tea. I tread lightly when I can since there's a grocery store in my building.

Nutritionally, the wheat toast gives me carbs for energy and mood balancing serotonin. The cereal adds fiber and additional carbs from the grains. It also contains protein and omega-3 from flax seeds. The main thing I'm missing, I can easily make up for at lunch time. I'm missing protein.

Eating flax seeds is not the ideal way to get any of the nutrition, since they should be ground up and not whole. They are whole in the Kashi cereal. That's no good. Grinding causes them to deteriorate within 8-hours, and it's messy. I don't enjoy grinding flax very much these days. I used to a decade ago.

I still have a dedicated grinder for when I might use it for a meal. It goes well with yogurt, on cereal or salads. It adds good nutty flavor and a load of fiber and nutrition. The yogurt, with it's probiotics, is really good for digestion and reducing water retention weight. Avoiding sodium and eating Potassium rich foods will help balance this.

For lunch, I should prepare something like a baked potato and something that will add to the protein for the day. I'm actually looking at new recipes now, planning a trip to the store. It's too hot for Lollapalooza. Maybe next year. I want to stay in the cool building and do some development work today.

I love navigating to this blog from search engines now. Just now this blog is number 11 for Disa Johnson, whereas before it was 21 and 22. As recently as a few days ago, it was 18 and 19. Since I am only really concerned about the first page of results, I haven't been catching screen shots of it fluctuating down in those positions. Today it's bumping up against page one!

I click on my result to navigate to it. Sure, it also boosts it a little in the rankings. The neat secret is, as long as you go ahead with the search and click naturally, it'll help you in areas where there isn't, (nor in my case was there any much), competition. I chronicled the true story of the changing rankings, beating a popular blogger with Twitter and brand new blogs.

It's best to just produce good content and promote it with natural means.  I've decided to go ahead and journal more publicly than I had privately all this time. I expect to keep it up. I'd be surprised if I have many (or any) subscribers at this point. I just remember how vulnerable I was when I hadn't produced any content yet. It was all very interesting.

Disa Johnson Code

disa-johnson.jpg

Funny how I am writing a blog entry as another journal entry, in part, because I want to continue writing my book. I don't have too many aspirations for all this to turn into a movie, but it's frightfully funny to hear the NPR radio story on the Julia Child story and blog inspired movie coming out as I type. Anyway, it's just code for what I'm musing about this morning.

This blog will discuss matters of code. Yesterday I downloaded the Apple Developer Connection xcode software which contains necessary things, software developer's toolkit(s), to help me develop with this Macbook. I should even have the SDK for iPhone development. I just have to remember to go slow, one step at a time.

I'm writing a book. I'll be writing more code. I'll be writing fewer client reports. I am hoping today that I get to strike a deal that I think should really help me in this life transition. It's not that I am only physically transforming, mentally and spiritually, I am also transforming myself to a new higher level. I just have to remain sane while I do it; no easy task.

So this journal entry number two, although there are other posts, is a personal note that contains more Disa Johnson code for where I am headed next, (not that anyone is listening right now). I'm listening to NPR. The Julia Child story has finished. The day's news has begun since it's the top of the hour. I'm off to peruse source code.

I am glad to hear that a ban which was originally in place during the Clinton administration is now going to be enforced. During the Bush administration years, the ban was lifted and mired in controversy and court actions. For eight years, the timber industry has been continuing to build new roads into forestland totally unfettered by the ban.

The forests that are depleted as a result include delicate old-growth trees. The trouble with old-growth clear cutting, is that these old stands of trees supply the variance in the gene pool of forest where they live. That's crucial for forest health. When genes are depleted, forests become more susceptible to disease, our world inches closer to what is depicted in movies like Brazil.

We need trees to breathe. The futuristic doomsday scenes from Brazil should be avoided at all costs! The ban was originally in place, but the Bush administration was determined to be pro timber business and lifted the ban. That allowed the timber industry to build roads into these delicate forests for easier access and extract valuable timber.

The clear-cut strategy of deforestation has led to short-term profits. It has depleted our forests to alarmingly low levels, particularly old-growth trees, where less than 3% of old-growth remains. That's shameful. It's harming our environment on many levels. At least now 40-million acres are going to be protected.

The Obama administration will protect our trees and forests from further timber industry encroachment using the Clinton era ban on new roads into our forests. That will help save our natural resources for better uses. If you really are pro business, then this is a win for you too.

Consider that the forest industry makes the tiniest fraction of products from the plundered timber. The actual facts show that we lose in the end, because our timber is more profitable short-term when timber industry firms ship and sell it quick abroad. The real profit ends up leaving home.

Imported products from our natural resources are sold back to us as tables and chairs, all manner of wooden things. That's short-term thinking, a long-term FAIL. This thinking has already led to our demise in global business importance. We're just not going to be that important anymore. Face it. It's too late. It's one example of American ingenuity gone very wrong. Save what we have left.
